An evening at The Odditorium

An evening at The Odditorium

Tonight was the grand opening party for the new exhibit at the Massillon Museum.  Holy cow, what a great night! This exhibit, The Odditorium, is a collection of many different bizarre objects that have been acquired by the museum over the years.  These are the things that otherwise might not fit in with a traditional display.  Like, for instance, a wreath made of hair.

Moving right along…

Actually I’m getting ahead of myself.  Before we even made it into the museum there was a party on the lawn!  The Bizarros were playing some cool tunes.

Here’s the crowd going wild!

And the refreshment station.

Inside there was lemonade and several kinds of popcorn!

Then you entered the Wunderkammer House…

Each ‘room’ in this house has a theme and a family member is there, too.  This, of course, is the Mother’s room.

Interestingly enough, the woman standing in line behind us had her very own alligator purse that was similar to this one and had belonged to her grandmother.

Next up is the Son’s room.  I’d also like you to know that this is NOT Oscar.  Although he will be along shortly. :)

I don’t know what this thing is, but it surely creeped me out…

Next is the Daughter’s room.

Speaking of things that creep me out…

Then we went into the kitchen and found the Maid.

Grandpa’s room was right next door!

I took this next picture because I thought that the helmet was cool and also because if Dave had been with me he’d probably have thought that it was cool, too, and would have wanted to try it on. :)

The Father’s room was our last stop along the way and we ran into a familiar, uh, face?

There you are, Oscar!!

Also, a new friend…  Choking Charlie.

After visiting with the Wunderkammer family we toured the other floors because my mom had never been to MassMu before.

I took this next picture, probably for the second time because I never realized before that there was a dog in the picture!

Something that I find amazing about Immel’s Circus is that you can look at it a dozen times and see things you’ve never seen before.  Like, for instance, these elephants.

And the balloon vendor in the grandstand.

Due to the Massillon Tiger debacle at the Top of the Viaduct Restaurant (where we had dinner at tonight again, by the way) I felt compelled to have my picture taken with this Massillon Tiger. ;)

Hahahahaha

Lastly I took a few pictures outside.

The Lincoln Highway post is lurking in the background, just taking it all in…

And because this is a Lincoln Highway blog, I close with a picture of the Lincoln Theatre.

So.  To sum up this evening…. WOW.  If you’ve never been to the Massillon Museum, now’s the time to go.  This was a great, wonderful, and fun evening and a very cool exhibit.  It’s only going to be there for a limited time so don’t miss out!

Until my next adventure with the Massillon Tiger, here’s to you and here’s to the road…

A trip down memory lane

A trip down memory lane

I have recently been trying to restore some order to my bookshelves and while I was in the midst of working I came across a photo album with a variety of different pictures of all of my favorite things.  Of course, amongst these were several pictures from along the Lincoln Highway so I thought that I’d post them for everyone to see.  Let me first apologize, though, because these are pictures of pictures so the quality might not be that great.

First up is a picture from… Yeah, I actually have no idea other than it’s along the LH.  Anybody recognize this place?

Then there’s the General Warren Inne in Malvern, Pennsylvania.  I drove past here once, but never got the chance to stop in although it looks like a really neat place!

And, of course this is a picture of the old Hanoverton Hardware.

I believe that this is the Control Station in East Canton.  I know that this picture and maybe some of the others say that they’re from 1998, but it isn’t true.  It’s more like that they were all taken somewhere between 2002 and 2003.

Here are a few shots from Lisbon.

Of course I saved my two favorites for last!!

I love these two pictures for many reasons, not the least of which is that the ‘lighthouse’ is still standing!

So, until I head out on the road again or dig up more pictures, here’s to you and here’s to the road…

When worlds collide…

When worlds collide…

What happens when a Lincoln Highway fan who is also a silverware artist has some spare time on her hands?

This.

If you remember correctly I said I had a perfect use for those nifty stickers that I got from the Ohio Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor folks.  It just took me awhile to put everything together.

And really, if you think about it, this is the perfect spoon for this necklace.  While I do not know the exact date of its’ production, my best guess is that it was made somewhere right around the time that the Lincoln Highway came into existence.  It’s like this spoon and the Lincoln Highway were made for each other!!!

I bet you can guess what I’ll be wearing at this year’s convention!

Until then, here’s to the spoons and the forks in the road. :)

Ahoy, Mateys! There be treasure along the Lincoln Highway!!

Ahoy, Mateys! There be treasure along the Lincoln Highway!!

(Because one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.)

So…  Anyways.

Yeah, I was out again this week in Orrville and had some time to kill.  This time I ended up heading towards Wooster.  In one of my other lives I use recycled and ‘found’ objects to create art so I went exploring at a few local antique and thrift stores.

First I stopped in at Uptown Downtown which is located at 215 West Liberty Street, Wooster, OH 44691.  Their phone number is 330-262-9735.

I didn’t actually end up buying anything here, but I did find a few interesting items…

Look out, Minnie Pearl!!  (No, this is NOT my hat.) :)

This next thing is just wrong.

Can you read the small label on the can?  It says that the rattling noise that you hear is actually from old coffee beans!

Next I stopped in to Friendtique which happens to be right next door at 223 West Liberty Street #C, Wooster, OH 44691.  Their phone number is 330-262-2012.

Friendtique is run by the Friends of Hospice and all of their proceeds go to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County.

While I was there I found two candelabras that I could use.  Unfortunately I forgot to take their pictures.  Maybe I will show them later on in their final form.

I found some spare Barbie parts or sleeping Barbie zombies, I’m not really sure.  Do zombies sleep?

And some dolls that were awake but not looking very thrilled about it.

All told I spent about $5 on this adventure but had a fun time looking around.  Of course, any day’s a good day when you’ve got a little bit of time to squander driving on the Lincoln Highway.

So until I get to goof off again, here’s to you and here’s to the road…

Pie is brain food, right?

Pie is brain food, right?

Today I had my last exam of the semester in American Sign Language.  I was working in Orrville which, you know, is kinda sorta almost on the Lincoln Highway and not too far from Massillon.  Awhile back I had asked on facebook for good places to go for breakfast along the Lincoln Highway.  And, by the way, to anyone reading this blog, I pose the same question…

Well, anyways, the folks at the Massillon Museum suggested that I try the Top of the Viaduct Restaurant, however, it took me until today to finally make it that far but I needed a place to sit and study for awhile so I thought I’d give it a try.

Here’s the restaurant and by the way I should let you know that this picture was taken after lunch.  When I got there, the whole parking lot was full and I got the last spot on this side.  I should probably also mention that they are located at 607 Lincoln Way W., Massillon, OH 44647 and their phone number is 330-832-8292.

Here’s a few pictures of the menu…

Here are a few pictures of the inside of the restaurant…

Here’s my reading material.

Oh, and let’s not forget the view out the windows.

If you’re still with me, now we get to the good stuff.

For the sake of the blog I ordered a cup of the Boom-Boom Bean Soup.  And I have to say that, being a connoisseur of bean soup, this was one of the best bean soups that I have ever eaten.  It had such an interesting blend of flavors as it was slightly smoky, slightly sweet, and slightly salty.  Totally delicious.

Next I ordered the Cheeseburg which came with fries.

After all that I was pretty well stuffed, but everyone around me seemed to be ordering pie so I figured it was the thing to do.  I asked my waitress to decide for me between the chocolate peanut butter, custard, and chocolate pie.  She chose chocolate and she was sooooo right.

Now, looking at this picture you might get the wrong impression of this humble little pie.  But let me assure you that this is truly THE BEST CHOCOLATE PIE EVER.  No, no one is paying me to say this.  They probably didn’t even notice that I was there except for wondering why there was some strange woman taking pictures of her food.  But I can’t urge you strongly enough to go and try this pie.

And, since I was at the Top of the Viaduct Restaurant I figured I should stroll on over to the viaduct itself.

How many times have we (locals) driven past this sign and never knew what it actually said?  (If you click on the picture it will enlarge so that you can read it.)  It’s pretty neat, I think.

Here’s the view of the restaurant from the other side.  There’s a tiger under the sign but I didn’t realize how hard he was to see until I got home.  So, dad, if you don’t believe me (yeah, right) you’ll just have to drive over there yourself and check it out. :)

And, last but not least since we all know that I have a fascination with old service stations, I thought I’d throw in a picture of this gem which is simply lovely and only two doors down.

So, until we meet again here’s to the chocolate pie and here’s to the road…

The Ohio Lincoln Highway Historic Byway wants to be your friend!

Sounds like an offer you can’t refuse…

As some of you may know, I am a graduate student and it’s come to be that time of year when homework completion is ever on my mind…  The many papers and projects that I am currently working on have been keeping me from the road so until this month is over and my homework is all done you won’t be hearing too much from me.

In the meantime, though, I thought I’d give you something fun to check out so I’m spreading the good word about the Ohio Lincoln Highway Historic Byway.  I became their friend a couple of months back and maybe you should, too!

For only $20 dollars you get all this really neat stuff!!!

I’m personally very excited about the stickers.  (You may see them in one of my future postings having been transformed into something else.) ;)

So, anyways, check out their website which is pretty cool and if you’d like to become their friend you can sign up using this link.

I’d also like to say that I’d totally LOVE to be able to go on the Ghostly Tales of the Lincoln Highway Motorcoach Tour if only life and time would allow.  You should definitely check it out on their website soon!

Almost forgot to mention that you can also find them on facebook here.

So until my homework’s all done, here’s to the road and here’s to you!

Happy Birthday, My Lincoln Highway! Look how far we’ve come!!

Happy Birthday, My Lincoln Highway! Look how far we’ve come!!

Wow.  It’s hard to believe that I’ve been blogging about my road for a whole year now. It’s just amazing to me that what started as a solo trip out here in cyberspace has turned into a journey full of friendly faces, some familiar, and some that I’ve met along the way.

Here’s a look back at some of my favorite pictures from the past year.  (You knew Grand View Point would be first.  Right?)  :)

Thanks to all of you for traveling with me.  Hope to see you again soon, on the road…

MassMu is waiting for you! (part two – Immel’s Circus)

MassMu is waiting for you! (part two – Immel’s Circus)

This post is the second part of my visit to the Massillon Museum.

My favorite thing of all at the museum was Immel’s Circus.  I mean, wow, all the pieces were carved by hand and most of them were carved by Dr. Immel himself!  I certainly wouldn’t have that kind of patience.

And so, without further delay is a slideshow of this amazing circus…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Click here to find out more information about the circus which was carved by Dr. Robert M. Immel, a native of Massillon.

And because I forgot to mention this in my last post, I’ll let you know that the Massillon Museum is located at 121 Lincoln Way East, Massillon, OH 44646.  Their phone number is 330-833-4061 and they are open Tuesday thru Saturday from 9:30 to 5 and on Sundays from 2-5.  If you’re in the area, you should definitely stop by.

So until next time, here’s to Dr. Immel, Harvey, and Oscar, and here’s to you!

MassMu is waiting for you! (part one)

MassMu is waiting for you! (part one)

I finally made it to the Massillon Museum yesterday!  Because the slideshow gods aren’t with me today, I’m going to divide this into two different posts.  This first post will be about the museum except for Immel’s Circus and the second post will be on Immel’s Circus alone.

Following are quite a few pictures from the current exhibit on the first floor.  I loved looking at all  of the old dresses and was surprised to find that a few of them were actually new!  See if you can guess which ones are ‘modern’ and which ones aren’t.  (Hint: the information sheets provided are included for some of the dresses and all of the new ones so that you can tell for sure.)

Next I went upstairs to the second floor.

I really liked the Massillon Tigers exhibit, although, I wasn’t very good at the photo opportunity and I certainly don’t match up to a football player. :)

Here’s a little slideshow of the room that the circus is housed in…

Next I went down to the lower level where I met Harvey and Oscar.

There were footprints to show me the way!

Here’s Harvey and his regiment. :)

I loved this next picture.  The caption says that it’s a reunion of all the soldiers with a painting that they had commissioned of Harvey so that he would always be with them when they assembled as a group.

This is Oscar.  (I don’t think he’s a grouch!)

So, stay tuned for my next post from the Massillon Museum featuring Immel’s Circus!

The McKinley Memorial is magnificent!

The McKinley Memorial is magnificent!

Well, I had planned to explore the Massillon Museum this weekend.  However, since this is Ohio, you never know whether or not the weather will cooperate and I didn’t have any luck getting there.  Fortunately, though, I took these shots of the McKinley Memorial awhile ago and was going to wait until I had time to visit the McKinley Library and Presidential Museum but I’ll save that visit for another post.

The McKinley Memorial commemorates the 25th president of the United States of America.  Construction on this beautiful building began in 1905 and was completed by 1907.  It is located at 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW, Canton, Ohio, 44708 which is less than 1/2 mile off of the Lincoln Highway.  The monument is closed during the winter.  Sometime when it’s open, though, I’ll return and explore it further as well as the Museum right next door.  For now, here’s a look at the monument from the outside.  And, yes, I did climb all 108 steps.  (Yet another reason I’m entitled to try out desserts when I’m out on a blogging mission.) :D

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So, until the weather clears again, here’s to the road and here’s to you…  Stay warm!
